"Let not poor Nelly starve." With these words, a dying king begs his brother—about to inherit the crown—to ensure that his mistress would be okay once he was gone. These words of Charles II have intrigued me for years and I'm so thrilled I was finally inspired enough to write music about them. Nell Gwynn was a fun and exciting historical figure, a comic actress on the stage and a royal mistress who worked her way up from an origin selling oranges on the steps of Covent Garden. This piece uses musical language from their time and place but also veers into my own beloved neoromanticism. Video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HG5UpjypZEs

The sheet music package includes:

-A bass clef part that goes into tenor sometimes (labeled "trombone", because it was originally written for a trombonist, but suitable for cello as well)

-A violin part which matches the YouTube video

-A flute part

-A clarinet part in Bb

-A piano midi mp3 so you can play with a robot accompanist

-A viola part with a different piano part IN AN ALTERNATE KEY (bc of range)
